Cyclopentasiloxane: The Invisible "Controlling Factor" in Antiperspirants and Body Washes

Cyclopentasiloxane (D5), as the core member of the cyclosiloxane polymer family, holds a significant position in the personal care sector due to its unique physical and chemical properties. In antiperspirants, D5 functions as a volatile carrier, performing dual roles: Firstly, its low surface tension characteristic enables it to quickly penetrate the sweat gland openings, working in synergy with aluminum salt-based antiperspirant components to form a hydrophobic membrane, reducing sweat secretion; Secondly, its rapid evaporation at room temperature ensures it leaves no residue on the skin surface, avoiding a sticky sensation, making it particularly suitable for use in summer or during physical activities. According to industry reports, in the Chinese antiperspirant market in 2025, products with D5 formulations accounted for over 60% of the total. The balance between its efficient sweat control and refreshing skin sensation has become the core selling point.
In the field of body wash, D5 has achieved technological upgrades by optimizing the foam structure and skin feel. Its low viscosity characteristic can reduce the overall viscosity of the formula, making the body wash easier to spread. At the same time, it works in synergy with surfactants to generate dense and elastic foam. For instance, a high-end body wash brand added 3% of D5, reducing the foam diameter to 0.2 millimeters, creating a "cloud-like touch", and leaving no false slip on the skin after rinsing. Moreover, the volatility of D5 enables it to dissipate quickly during the rinsing stage, leaving only the breathable protective film formed by the silicon-oxygen chain segments, helping the skin retain moisture and achieving the dual effects of "cleaning and moisturizing".
