Leveling Agents: Key Additives for a Perfect Finish

Hits: 456 img

During the coating application and film-forming process, leveling agents are key additives for addressing surface defects and enhancing coating texture. By regulating the fluidity and surface tension of the coating, they achieve an ideal, uniform, and smooth coating. They are widely used in the architectural, automotive, and furniture industries.
Surface tension differences during coating application can easily lead to problems such as craters, orange peel, and brush marks, which leveling agents can address precisely. Polyether-modified polysiloxane leveling agents can quickly reduce the surface tension of the coating, eliminating interfacial tension differences between the substrate and the coating and preventing craters. Acrylate leveling agents improve the fluidity of the coating, reducing brush and roller marks. They are particularly well-suited for solvent-based wood coatings, resulting in a mirror-like finish.
Leveling agents play an even more critical role in industrial coatings. During the application of automotive OEM paint, fluorocarbon-modified leveling agents prevent pinholes and fisheyes during the baking process, ensuring a uniform color and delicate texture. During coil coating production, leveling agents enhance the coating's leveling during high-speed application, ensuring a flawless surface while also enhancing coating adhesion and weather resistance.
With the rise of environmentally friendly coatings, water-based leveling agents have also achieved technological breakthroughs. By optimizing their molecular structure, they reduce VOC emissions while maintaining excellent leveling, contributing to the green development of the coatings industry.
