What are the precautions for adding emulsified silicone oil to personal care products?

Hits: 545 img

When adding emulsified silicone oil to personal care products, it is necessary to take into account efficacy, safety and user experience. The following are key precautions:
1. Concentration adaptability
Different products need to match reasonable concentrations: hair care products (such as hair masks and conditioners) usually add 3%-8% to form an effective protective film; skin care products (such as face creams and hand creams) are recommended to be controlled at 0.5%-3% to avoid sticky skin or clogged pores due to excessive concentration.
Need to be adjusted in combination with product positioning: Repair products for dry and damaged hair can appropriately increase the concentration, while refreshing wash products need to reduce the proportion to balance smoothness and lightness.
2. Stability of emulsified system
Ensure sufficient emulsification: Silicone oil itself is a hydrophobic substance and needs to be combined with a suitable emulsifier (such as a nonionic surfactant) to form a stable emulsion through processes such as homogenization and stirring to prevent stratification, precipitation or oil floating, otherwise it will affect the appearance and use of the product. Compatible with other ingredients: Avoid direct mixing with strong electrolytes (such as high-concentration salts) or ingredients with strong acidity and alkalinity to prevent destruction of the emulsified structure. It is recommended to conduct compatibility testing during formula development.
3. Safety and compliance
Choose food-grade or cosmetic-grade raw materials: It must comply with industry standards (such as China's "Cosmetic Safety Technical Specifications") to ensure the purity of raw materials and avoid residual harmful impurities (such as unreacted monomers) that irritate the skin and mucous membranes.
Pay attention to the applicability of sensitive skin: Although emulsified silicone oil has good biocompatibility, it is recommended to pass dermatological safety tests for infants and sensitive skin products, control the amount of addition and avoid compounding irritating ingredients.
4. Balanced sensory experience
Avoid excessive accumulation: Long-term use of hair care products with high concentrations of silicone oil may cause hair to "feel heavy", appear flat and greasy. Amino acids, vegetable oils and other ingredients can be used in the formula to reduce the residual feeling.
Optimize skin feel and breathability: Moisturizers (such as hyaluronic acid) or refreshing oils (such as jojoba oil) are required in skin care products to neutralize the occlusiveness of silicone oil and ensure that the skin is breathable and does not cause acne.
5. Storage and process control
Temperature needs to be controlled during the production process: high temperature may affect the stability of emulsification. It is recommended to mix at 50-60℃ to avoid high temperature from destroying the structure of silicone oil.
Storage environment moisture-proof and sun-proof: The finished product needs to be sealed and stored in a cool place to prevent the emulsification system from failing due to temperature fluctuations or light, affecting the stability of the product during the shelf life.
By scientifically controlling the above points, the safety, stability and comfort of the product can be guaranteed while giving full play to the advantages of emulsified silicone oil.
