Phenyl silicone oil is a product in which part of the methyl group in methyl silicone oil is replaced by phenyl group. It has the appearance of a colorless or light yellow transparent oil.
It has excellent performance, a high viscosity-temperature coefficient, and a small thermal expansion coefficient, which enables it to maintain relatively stable performance at different temperatures. The solidification point of 5mol% phenyl silicone oil can be as low as -70℃, showing excellent low temperature resistance, especially suitable for occasions with extremely high requirements for cold resistance. At the same time, its flash point is >300℃, with good thermal stability. The gelation time in 250℃ hot air is as long as 1750h. With the increase of phenyl mole fraction, high temperature resistance, radiation resistance, lubricity and solubility in organic solvents are improved.
The preparation of phenyl silicone oil is usually completed by telomerization reaction of the hydrolyzate of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, dimethyltetraphenyldisiloxane and methylphenyldiethoxysilane in the presence of a catalyst.
Due to its excellent performance, phenyl silicone oil is widely used. In the industrial field, it can be used as a lubricant, heat exchange fluid, insulating oil, and a carrier for gas-liquid chromatography; in electronic instruments, it is an ideal liquid damping dielectric fluid for insulation, lubrication, damping, shockproofing, dustproofing, and high-temperature heat carrier. In the cosmetics field, it is often used as an additive for skin care products, hair conditioners, etc. because of its good compatibility with cosmetic ingredients, stability to heat and ultraviolet rays, and unique gloss.
