The trend of international trade under the new international tariff form

Hits: 632 img

At a time when the global economy is deeply integrated, the new international tariff form is profoundly reshaping the international trade pattern. At present, trade protectionism is on the rise, and countries such as the United States frequently wield the tariff stick, bringing many uncertainties to international trade.
From the perspective of trade scale, high tariff policies have caused the prices of imported goods to rise, consumers' purchase costs have increased, and the scale of imports has shrunk accordingly. At the same time, other countries' imposition of tariffs on export goods will increase export costs, reduce the price competitiveness of their own goods in the international market, and lead to a decrease in export volume. For example, the United States has imposed high tariffs on Chinese goods, and the annual trade volume between China and the United States is expected to drop sharply, and the order volume of many Chinese export companies has declined.
The trade structure has also changed due to tariff adjustments. In order to avoid high tariffs, countries have adjusted their production and supply chain layouts, and industrial transfer has accelerated. Some labor-intensive industries have shifted from developed countries with higher tariffs to developing countries. At the same time, countries have adjusted tariffs to encourage or restrict the import and export of certain commodities and optimize the structure of trade commodities based on their own industrial policies and economic development needs.
The trade balance is also affected. If a country imposes high tariffs on imported goods, while other countries impose fewer restrictions on its exports, it may lead to trade imbalances, which in turn have a negative impact on the country's economy.
However, challenges also contain opportunities. Faced with the new tariff situation, China has actively adjusted its strategy and strengthened trade cooperation with the "global south" countries, such as increasingly close trade with ASEAN in the fields of electronics and machinery. Enterprises have also adjusted their global supply chain layout, transferred some production links to overseas low-tariff areas, and at the same time sought alternative raw material and parts suppliers in China to improve the independent and controllable supply chain.
In the future, although international trade faces many challenges, the rise of emerging market countries and the promotion of digitalization and intelligent trends have brought new growth points to international trade. Countries should abandon trade protectionism, strengthen cooperation, and jointly promote the construction of an open world economy so that international trade can achieve sustainable development under the new tariff situation.
